Wintringham Primary Academy is a two-storey school, built around a central garden court following the principles of a ‘forest school.’ It provides places for over 700 pupils aged 3-11 alongside 60 teachers and support staff.
The building has a curved and slender timber roof over the structural CLT-built classrooms and features a broad canopy space for outside and informal learning. Choosing a CLT framing system was critical because it allowed the full frame to be erected within 2.5 months and reduced the cost of the foundation package significantly.
The use of engineered timber improves wellbeing, with studies showing that children who learn in a timber classroom have a lower heart rate than those in a standard room.
